Animal Rescue

Meet Minnie, Marie and Mo
Nina Miller, our resident pre-school director, teacher and friend, is wearing yet another hat these days ~ that of animal rehabilitator. Nina spent the past year interning at Earthplace in Westport, earning the necessary hours to receive her rehabilitator’s license. She is now in a position to accept a few small mammals.

When we built our new shed, we devoted a corner of it for animal rehabilitation and it’s already being put to good use. The first batch came to us after the big March storm ~ five baby squirrels. Nina thinks they were about one and a half weeks old when they arrived at our door, with no fur and tightly closed eyes. At that point she was syringe feeding them every 2 hours. Their eyes are now open, they’ve got soft silver fur and they are taking 5 ml’s of formula every four hours.

Enjoy these photos, as the babies are not on display in our zoo room. By keeping exposure to humans to a minimum, it increases their chances of surviving in the wild upon their release.

What do I do with a wounded animal?

The Nature Center receives many calls from concerned residents about found, injured and abandon animals.

Birds, rabbits, deer and squirrels are some of the more common animals that make their way to our door.

If you have an injured or orphaned animal, please do not drop it off at the Nature Center. Call first or, if we are not here, contact one of the local rehabbers listed below. Thank you!
